6 New Year’s resolutions that will work!

‘’New year, new me’’…Okay, this quote is a massive cliché, but it doesn’t hurt to make New Year’s resolutions. Giving up smoking, exercising more, eating healthier. Many people make these kinds of resolutions at the beginning of a new year, but have often ‘forgotten’ about them a few weeks in. My tip? Set realistic goals and don’t be too hard on yourself! This way it’s easier for you to stick to these resolutions and to reach your goals, which will make you feel much better. Let yourself be inspired by these 6 resolutions that will work. Let’s do this, ladies! Which one of these resolutions are you going to try? Or maybe you have made a different resolution? Let me know in the comments below!

1. Airplane mode on & lights out
We all know that getting a good night’s rest is one of the best things you can do for your health. But did you know that your smartphone is likely to impact the quality of your sleep? That’s why it’s helpful to switch on the airplane mode on your phone before turning in for the night. I’ve started doing this myself a little while ago and I’ve never slept better. Apparently, the radiation from your smartphone causes you to take longer before your reach the deeper stages of sleep and to spend less time in these deeper stages. That’s something you don’t want.

2. Buy some books or an e-reader and start reading
Trying to kick your social media addiction or trying to find something that will help you relax? Make sure you keep a page-turning thriller or romantic novel next to your bed so you can do a bit of reading before going to sleep. Relaxing this way instead of scrolling through your Instagram or Facebook feed will help you sleep better at night. You can also try curling up on the sofa with a book and leaving your phone in another room. No more wasting hours of your precious quality time on social media. You’ll thank me later. 😉

3. Fill your house with plants
Make sure you add plants to your shopping list straightaway! Simply having plants in your house relieves stress immediately. Caring for plants has been shown to have a calming effect on the nervous system and to decrease blood pressure. Having lots of plants gives your home that retro look (please check out the blog on vintage inspired interiors to find out more). Time to visit your local garden centre.

4. Donate the clothes you no longer wear to charity

Is your wardrobe overflowing? Then it’s time to start decluttering your wardrobe! This gives you a chance to get re-acquainted with the clothes you own (you might rediscover some retro dresses that you forgot you owned, oops). Decide which items you want to keep and which items you want to get rid of. The clothes you want to declutter might be a welcome addition to the wardrobe of a person living on a tight budget. It’s a win-win situation!

5. Compliment yourself in the mirror
Everyone (me included) has those days when they are not feeling their best or when they feel insecure about their looks (hello big fat zit on my chin). But please don’t ever put yourself down! You are perfect the way you are! Start your day by looking in the mirror and then giving yourself a compliment (it might sound a bit woolly, but just give it a try). These daily affirmations will help you create positive beliefs about yourself and you will start radiating confidence. If you don’t feel comfortable doing this, you can also write some compliments on a post-it and stick these on your mirror.

You should also start complimenting other people more. Once you start doing this, you’ll find you’ll get complimented in return. Besides, giving someone a compliment will not only make them but also yourself feel good!

6. Eliminate food guilt and just enjoy
Eating healthier and losing weight are the kind of resolutions that most people make but these are also the resolutions that very often fail. My tip: enjoy! Life is too short to miss out on all that delicious food. You could try aiming for a more balanced diet and to eat consciously so you enjoy the food you do eat more. Or you could have a cheat day for example on Saturdays or Sundays. After all, life would be really boring without chocolate, hamburgers, crisps and all that other delicious stuff!
