A beginner’s guide to going retro!

“Oh, I love the way you are dressed! I adore that retro style. But I don’t know how to wear it myself.” I hear that all the time. Such a pity, all those retro-loving ladies that haven’t completely mastered that vintage-inspired style (yet). Maybe you can relate to this problem? But that’s all going to change from now on. These six steps will help you transform yourself into a real retro babe!

Step 1: Be bold!
The first step is also the most important one. Dare to pull out all the stops! When I talk to women who are considering wearing retro clothes, the same issue always seems to come up: they are afraid of standing out. They don’t want other people commenting on their appearance. Don’t let that hold you back. It doesn’t matter if you feel inspired by Marilyn Monroe or if you prefer Audrey Hepburn, just go for it. Like Dita herself said: “Ignore the critics.Only mediocrity is safe from ridicule. Dare to be different.”

Step 2: Start with what you have
Nobody turns into a retro diva overnight. Take your time, start by checking out what’s already in your wardrobe. Do you have clothes that look retro and that you feel comfortable in? Use these items to create different looks. Matching a cute blouse, a pair of capri pants and high heels will give you a real 1950s look. But when you wear that same blouse teamed with a pencil skirt and a scarf tied around your neck, you’ll look like a femme fatale straight from the 1940s! Figure out which clothing styles and outfits you like best. And next time you go shopping, you’ll know what to look for. Don’t forget to try on different retro accessories, so you know which ones you like best. Do you like wearing a flower in your hair? Or do you love the classy look of a string of pearls around your neck? A veil hat, why not? Try them all and surprise yourself!

Step 3: Try out different hairstyles and make-up looks
This is a fun step: go all out with your hair and make-up. Red lipstick, bold eyeliner, up-do hairstyles, whatever you feel like! Don’t really know where to start? Why not use pictures of one of your favourite style icons as your inspiration? You will also find some great ideas on Pinterest. You’ll love this step 😉

Step 4: Get used to your new style
Even after years of wearing retro clothes, there are still times that I feel overdressed. Having all eyes on you takes some getting used to. Often, you might only think that’s the case while in reality people aren’t paying much attention to your clothes. And even if they are, it doesn’t have to be a bad thing: I often get compliments from kind strangers.

Step 5: Building a retro wardrobe
This might become your favourite step. 😉 Now that you know what you want and what it is that you are looking for, it will be easy to find beautiful new items. It’s okay to splurge a little, after all you’re transforming your entire wardrobe. Oh, and don’t forget to browse the items on offer in the TopVintage webshop.

Step 6: Rock it!
You have completed your transformation into a retro babe! Are you ready to wow, gorgeous?
